For many years, I’ve celebrated Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead. I like to remember people who have touched my life and passed on. Their pictures grace the mantle. We light candles, listen to their favorite music, and eat their favorite foods.

This year, I wanted to have a simple meal that brought together something of everyone who we remember on this day. Mojamix fit the bill. Here’s what we had:

A base of oats, hearty and nourishing, in memory of friend, Natasha, who supported me always

Apples for my grandmother, baker of pies

Strawberries for an old love (why? That’s private)

Almonds for an old neighbour who was kind, if a bit… nutty

Hemp seeds for my great–uncle Alex—well, I probably don’t need to tell you what HE was like

And Pumpkin seeds for mom, who carved with me on Halloween

Every

Year.

Peace to you as we enter the quiet of late fall and start to prepare for winter. It’s that time of year, so watch this space for great ideas for incorporating Mojamix into your holidays. We have great ideas for everyone on your list!

We’ve recently added a new ingredient to our menu, and we’d like to take this occasion to celebrate it: let’s hear it for the all-American pecan!

Native to this land, the buttery-rich pecan takes its name from the Algonquin word pakan, which means “a nut so hard it has to be cracked with a stone”. Thomas Jefferson was an early fan of these large, smooth, hard nuts. He liked them so much that he gave pecan trees to George Washington, who planted them at Mount Vernon. Since pecan trees can live to be over a thousand years old (and grow to be a hundred feet tall), their legacy still surrounds many such sites of early American history.

Today, the United States produces about eighty percent of the world’s pecans. The pecan tree is even the state tree of Texas. If you’d like to pour a little stars and stripes in your breakfast bowl, consider this: pecan pairs beautifully with apple. Layer them over our cinnamon crunch cereal base, and you’ve got Apple Pie Crunch! Cereal + patriotism = yum.

Deep in the forest of Alma-Ata* in the Tien-Shan mountains of what is now Kazakhstan, thousands of apple trees grow. Each one is unique, special in its own way. No two look alike, and no two bear fruit that tastes alike. From this forest came millions of seeds that grew millions of apple trees. Most of them were sour or bitter—good for making hard cider, but not much more.

But one of those seeds grew into a tree with sweet, delicious apples that dry beautifully, keeping their yummy, intense, apple taste. This tree was cloned, over and over, to create the varietal we chose for to offer our customers for their MojaMix. Give it a try! We promise you won’t be disappointed.
