Floor nut? Door nut? Hall nut? Walnut!

The Latin name for Walnut, Juglans, comes from Jupiter glans, or “Jupiter’s acorn”.  In other words, a nut fit for a god.  We agree—and so, apparently, do many of you!  Today the mighty walnut is one of our most-often ordered ingredients.

Walnuts are the oldest tree food enjoyed by humanity, dating back to 7000 BCE.  Originating in ancient Persia, they spread throughout the world to enjoy popularity everywhere.   Nutritionally, walnuts are a fabulous source of omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts are considered a herb in traditional Chinese medicine and are used to condition the kidney and intestines and strengthen the backs and knees.    They are even used as an offering to Mother Goddess Vaisnay Devi and as a celebratory food for the holiday of  Diwali.

The walnut first came to our fabulous home state of California in the late 1700s and grew until the present state of affairs:  California walnuts account for 99 percent of the walnuts sold in the US and two-thirds of walnuts in the world.  The walnuts you’ll find in our Mojamix are the cream of that crop.  Enjoy!

Epic Win

giftCertificate

Just as masters of Persian carpet weaving put in one wrong thread in each exquisite fabric art piece (with the reasoning that only God can create perfection) there is one, teeny, tiny thing wrong with this whole individualized cereal gig. Picking out the perfect cereal for yourself is one thing… but combining the perfect textures and flavors for another’s palate can be a task of Herculean proportion!

Unfortunately, this flaw rears its ugly head at no time more than the holidays, when you would like nothing better than to share the awesome-o Mojamix experience with everyone you know.  That’s why we decided to offer the Mojamix gift card.

As a minimal-carbon present that the recipient is sure to use (who could resist?) and helps support local farmers, our card is The Perfect Green Gift.    They’re available in amounts from $10 to $200, with an email gift card (for extra greenieness!) or a paper gift card (for that fun “gift in the hand” feel).

This year, give something perfectly customized that they’re guaranteed to love.  And that you don’t have to think about at all.   Happy holidays, everyone.

Have a Holly, Jolly Breakfast

The holidays are a time to love. The holidays are a time to give. The holidays are a time to celebrate.

And above all, the holidays are a time to eat. Usually too much, and especially too much stuff that’s delicious–but not quite nutritious. That’s why in addition to recommending Mojamix as a fabulous, unique gift for everyone on your list, we suggest you pick up a little for yourself. Start off each morning of your busy holiday season with a bowl of mojamix with your favorite fruits and nuts. And give everyone you know the gift of an energetic, well fed, non-sugar-tweaked you.

Dia de Los Muertos

dia_muertos_110x93
For many years, I’ve celebrated Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead. I like to remember people who have touched my life and passed on. Their pictures grace the mantle. We light candles, listen to their favorite music, and eat their favorite foods.

This year, I wanted to have a simple meal that brought together something of everyone who we remember on this day. Mojamix fit the bill. Here’s what we had:

A base of oats, hearty and nourishing, in memory of friend, Natasha, who supported me always

Apples for my grandmother, baker of pies

Strawberries for an old love (why? That’s private)

Almonds for an old neighbour who was kind, if a bit… nutty

Hemp seeds for my great–uncle Alex—well, I probably don’t need to tell you what HE was like

And Pumpkin seeds for mom, who carved with me on Halloween

Every

Year.

Peace to you as we enter the quiet of late fall and start to prepare for winter. It’s that time of year, so watch this space for great ideas for incorporating Mojamix into your holidays. We have great ideas for everyone on your list!

crunchy/sexy

You may have noticed that we’ve added several new granola and trail mix blends to our menu. You guys said you loved eat-from-the-bag blends, and we listened. The next couple blog posts we’ll tell you a little bit more about the history of this delicious school of cereals and how you might best enjoy yours.

But first, let’s start with this. Strange but true: much like the VCR and Betamax, back at the beginning of its history, “granola” was in stiff competition with (wait for it…) “granula”. I think we can all be grateful that granola won that one.

“Granola” was developed by John Harvey Kellogg (yes, that Kellogg) as a highly nutritious food that is especially good for bowel health. His theory that a diet heavy in breakfast cereal would dampen sexual appetites. Happily, he turned out to be dead wrong about that. Today scientists know that a blend of high-protein, vitamin rich, fiber-heavy granola will support you in just about any physical activity you undertake. Or overtake. Or however you take it. ;-) The hippies knew this; why do you think granola got so popular again in the 60’s, anyway?

MojaMix Greens

Congratulations!  You’ve had the excellent idea to give MojaMix away as a gift, and now comes the best part:  the pretty, pretty wrapping.

According to the EPA, however, wrapping paper  contributes heavily to landfill trash– a whopping 25 percent extra between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.  Tossing it in the fireplace isn’t exactly an earth friendly solution either—many printing inks and foils contain toxic chemicals that are released into the air (and your lungs, eek!) when burned.

So, what’s the answer?  Luckily, there are several green ways to wrap a gift.  Here’s a few:

  1. Everyone is making the switch from plastic grocery bags to cloth, so why not make a pretty gift bag/shopping bag part of your gift?  A patterned cloth shopping bag can both hold a gift and be part of it!
  2. Invest in some reusable gift bags, such as Lyziwraps.
  3. Try using old maps as wrapping paper.  Reusable and educational!
  4. Wrap your MojaMix in an earth friendly fabric wrap–either as part of the gift, or to save for next time.
  5. Decorate the outside of the packaging with natural accents, such as pinecones, shells, or sprigs of berries.
  6. Consider biodegradable seed gift wrap.  Your recipient can plant the paper outside their front door and be greeted by gorgeous wildflower blooms (and be reminded of your generosity!) all summer long.
  7. To make the most of your green gifting, pass on the tape—most conventional tapes have a petroleum base, and it interferes with recycling. To wrap MojaMix without tape, make tight creases in the paper and tie it securely in both directions with a wool yarn, or natural twine.

Mojamix: The Perfect Corporate Gift

You know how great our cereals are… isn’t it time to share the love?  Luckily, our customizable packaging helps make Mojamix an ideal corporate gift.  Not only can you give each person just what they like inside, you can personalize the label with the name of your company and/or an appropriate quote.

Not sure who to give Mojamix to?  Here are a few ideas:

Bosses  Your boss has been looking out for you, and now it’s time to show your appreciation.  And ingenuity.  And good taste.

Clients  There are several kinds of clients you may consider giving Mojamix to. Most likely you’ll want to give your top clients something every once in a while, to show your appreciation for their continued business.  A bag of Mojamix is also the perfect way to let new client know they’ve made the right decision!

Employees  Your staff might occasionally need a boost in confidence or a reward for a job well done. A thoughtful (and delicious!) gift goes a long way.

Business Partners  They’ve worked with you on several occasions, given you discounts on services or products you might have needed at one point, and continue to work with you. Sometimes you just want to send them a reminder that you thank them for their continued support.

*Don’t know what would be perfect for a given individual?  Try Chocolicious or The Epicurian–everyone likes those!

A Sweet Treat that Can’t Be Beat

Many of our customers like a little bit of sweetness added to their Mojamix. Those same customers, though, tend to care about nutrition and food quality—not to mention personalized, flavourful selections! So we thought we’d walk you through a few of the fave options for topping your morning bowl of power:

 Agave Syrup

Agave syrup is roughly 25 percent sweeter than sugar and has trace amounts of minerals including calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. Agave has a low glycemic index, meaning it does not affect blood sugar and insulin levels as much as regular sugar. It tastes the most like white sugar of the options listed here.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is about 60 percent as sweet as sugar is a good source of magnesium and zinc. It is, as you hopefully already know, downright yummy.

Stevia

Available in both liquid and powder form, stevia is thirty times sweeter than sugar. It is easily dissolvable, so it can mix thoroughly with your milk or other liquid. Stevia is low in calories and may help lower blood sugar levels, thereby making it a great choice for diabetics. It contains iron, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. It also has a bit of an aftertaste that some people care for and some do not.

Honey

Honey is 25 to 50 percent sweeter than sugar and has powerful disease-protecting antioxidants. Do not give honey to children under one year of age as it may put them at risk for botulism. Different honeys have different tastes depending on the types of flowers the bees visited—shop around and find your favorite!

Now That’s Entertainment

You might not think of cereal as party food…  time for that to change. It’s come to our attention that some clever customers serve up a Mojamix buffet to their friends and families for Sunday brunch. What can we say? We always knew that our clientele were brilliant.

People often associate brunches entertaining with big holidays and hordes of people. To be sure, brunch offers a great excuse to gather a crowd. But a small brunch can be just as fun. Even the most time-strapped of folks will generally be free for a little java and morning crunch.  And unlike an evening party, your place is likely to look  just fine after they leave.

For a stress-free brunch preparation, order a diverse blend of Mojamix creations. We recommend including Epicurean, Chocolicious, Happy Camper, plus a couple of your own creations. Use our customized packaging option to pick some pithy quotes to print on the bags, or name the different cereals after after your guests. Put out some milk, goat’s milk, almond or soy milk, juices, coffee, hot chocolate (which you can also mix with Chocolicious), and a variety of fresh fruits. Try some umoja music in the background.

Set up should take you an hour, max.  But the fun memories–and the good impression you make–will last for years.
