A few years ago none of us had even heard of Goji berries… and now they’re everywhere! (Including, if you like, in your Mojamix.) But why? What exactly is the big deal about these little, wrinkly, red bits?
First, a bit of history. Goji berries grow on an evergreen shrub found in temperate and subtropical regions in China, Mongolia and in the Himalayas in Tibet. Goji has been eaten and used by herbalists in the Himalayan and Tibetan regions for over 6,000 years. The fruit is celebrated in festivals and is nicknamed the “happy berry”. (Why? Probably because of their traditional reputation for improving sexual function! )
Goji berries have a mild tangy taste that is both sweet and sour. Their shape and texture is similar to raisins. In traditional Chinese medicine goji berries are often eaten raw and dried, which is how you will find them in our Mojamix. These red berries contain complex phyto-nutrients and bio flavinoids. They are also high in calcium, iron, zinc, selenium, riboflavin, and vitamin C.
Goji berries have been tested on people in two published studies. A 1994 Chinese study, published in the Chinese Journal of Oncology, found that many people with cancer respond better to treatment when goji berries were added to their diet. Goji is also rated #1 on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which measures the antioxidant level in foods. Their Orac level is over five times higher than the next highest food. A superfood indeed… high five for goji!
